This August for the third year running KUŞKOR manned a stall at the UK Bird Fair.
The stall was a great success, our best yet, with hundreds of people visiting our stall for information on Birds in North Cyprus, their conservation and most importantly, how to see them! We gave out hundreds of leaflets and our attractive posters were well read. Check out our poster displays at our publicationspage.
Our continued presence at the UK Birdfair was once again supported by the TRNC Presidency, who financed the cost of the stall and our two flights from North Cyprus. We are extremely grateful to President Mustafa Akıncı and his Presidency and we are confident that this worthy investment will reap dividends to the TRNC economy through expanding birding tourism. Indeed many visitors who approached our stall already had holidays planned in or had their own accommodation in TRNC.
Damla and myself set up and manned the stall for the three day fair and thanks to the support of Evren Pirefendi, Geoff Gibbs and Nathan Edmonds, were able to move around the fair a lot more than in previous years.
We attended talks on trapping in the Mediterranean and had in depth conversations with many potential collaborators.
Most pleasing was a conversation between Damla and UK celebrity birder Bill Oddie, who specifically paid a visit or stall. Bill, who has been birding in North Cyprus and recognises its value, was sympathetic to the problems faced by KUŞKOR in gaining long-term international support for its work.
Over the years we have become well acquainted with regional birding buddies George Spiridakis, Kerem Ali Boyla and Soner Bekir through our camping together at the fair. The warm weather made for a nice atmosphere during our evening campsite gatherings beside Rutland Water.
