New Classification for Endemic Bird Species of Cyprus

Five owl species are commonly seen on Cyprus: Barn owl, short-eared owl, long-eared owl, little owl and scops owl.

Scops owl is the smallest one. Its name originates form the ancient Greek word skopos meaning "to watch". It is a nocturnal owl and lives a very secretive life. It is almost impossible to see it when it is perched, yet it watches you! Although scops owl is hard to see, it is very easy to hear as its song booms through the night and can be heard from a long distance.

Scops owl was considered to be one of the five endemic subspecies of Cyprus, not a full species. But the individuals breeding on the island have a peculiar call and recent research has pointed out that this call is much more unique than previously recognised. As a result of these new findings, based on genetic differentiation and on data provided by the KUŞKOR ringing scheme, Cyprus Scops Owl is now considered a third species endemic to Cyprus by the International Ornithological Congress, but it is yet to be accepted by other taxonomists.

In order to see birds it is necessary to become a part of the silence.

Robert Lynd

Everyone likes birds. What wild creature is more accessible to our eyes and ears, as close to us and everyone in the world, as universal as a bird?

David Attenborough

A bird doesn't sing because it has an answer, it sings because it has a song.

Maya Angelou

God loved the birds and invented trees. Man loved the birds and invented cages.
